Linden Postcard Show 2010

I have 3 paintings entered into the Linden Postcard Show this year. It's such a fun show. All the works have to be under 30x30 cm. They get thousands of entries each year, which results in the walls from the floor to the ceiling being lined with an huge variety of fantastic artworks, something for everyone. Attending the show is such a feast for the eyes, and leaves one feeling giddy.... or was that the wine.

Anyway my husband has also entered 3 of his sculptures too, so if you go, keep an eye out for our work.

I completed this one on the weekend. It's currently untitled and is of my daughter doing a jigsaw puzzle. My aim for this painting was to concentrate less on the scene I was painting, and more on the colours to create a soft yet colourful, harmonised painting.

My painting "Gluttony" was selected to exhibit as a finalist in the 2009 Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (the EMSLA).

I've been to the show, and thought there was heaps of fabulous artwork there. Definitely worth checking out.

The winner of the show this year was Robert R Walker with a painting of 3 used house brushes... sounds weird as a subject but it was a very nice painting.

I apologise for my absence of late. Real life had taken over for a bit, school holidays and the flu have been my main focus, but it's back into painting this week.

In July my "The Bird and The Chandelier" painting made the first round finals of the Mount Eyre Art Prize - Rex Livingston Art Gallery, Sydney. It didn't make the second round finals, but I'm stoked that it was selected in the first place and it had a lovely journey down to Sydney and back.

Well that is until I put the sold one in the post on Monday. At least I will have my cupcake wall complete for over the weekend :)

In the past week I have started to change the paint I have been using. Now I'm having second thoughts, either the paint is bodgy or my skills are poor, but I just can't seem to manipulate this new paint to my satisfaction. I have spent a great deal of time painting this painting and I think I am unhappy with the result.

My old paint was sticky just like honey, this is thick like peanut butter, the old was too shiny, this is not shiny enough..... I'm just tossing back and forth, I like the new paint, I hate the new paint, like it, hate it....

I am very used to the high sheen of my old paint, so maybe it's just that. I disliked the high sheen, it was too difficult to photograph properly, and I was having some technical issues with it drying properly. But the new paint appears dead compared to the other.... but it just might be me......

Edited to add, my photo is a bit out of square, just imagine the painting is a bit higher on the right.. OK.....

Some quick sketches - Dog Toys !!

A few quick ink sketches of things laying around the floor. Dog toys! I tried to do a water colour wash over some of them, but I haven't got any water colours, so I used pencils then wet them... kind of didn't work too well... duh!

First 2 are of a little rubber pink elephant that my dog loves and carries around all the time.

Then there is a little soft bunny who has had 2 of it's front legs eaten off.

Lastly is... is it Simba? It's a rubber toy that the dog has had buried in the garden for a couple of years and decided to bring inside the other day.

Next time I sketch I will do something serious... I promise!

Currently untitled bird and chandelier.

The little bird is a pee wee, or magpie lark. For 6 years we have had this little pee wee visit us daily. He wasn't shy, would eat crumbs from the table etc. It's name was Stumpy... poor little thing was missing a foot, but that never seemed to bother it. Cheeky little bird, it came into the house a couple of times! Stumpy hasn't been around now for quite a few months, so I guess his time is over. We now get visits from other pee wee's and this is one of them, not as cheeky and bold as Stumpy but it is nice to see them.

Now to name the painting... any ideas?

Linden Postcard Show - St Kilda

I received a phone call from the Linden Gallery. All my paintings in the show have sold! So I'm very happy about that. Also from that show I received an additional 4 commissions, so I have been busy painting those, drying them, framing and now have bundled them up all ready to be transported to their new homes.

A Chandelier

I can't get the colour to photograph well on this. In real life it is a lot lighter and creamier in colour. I think it's because it's wet. They seem to photograph more accurately when dry and not so shiny. And if I had a tiny bit of patience, I'd wait until next week to take the photo's.....

I went out to lunch with my girlfriends recently for my birthday, it was lovely. Lovely company, lovely food, lovely decor. Just lovely lovely lovely. And there was this lovely chandelier in the restaurant. Gee it was lovely. But I didn't tell my friends that I had a thing going for this chandelier, they'd possibly think I was a bit crazy!...

So this is a drawing of the chandelier. It was black, and needed a good dust. I really liked it and hope to somehow incorporate it, or a similar chandelier into an upcoming painting.

This is a painting of the graffiti in Hosier Lane, Melbourne. The graffiti in the laneways of Melbourne is truly amazing. The blue building at the end of the laneway is the The Ian Potter Centre - National Gallery of Victoria, which was my favourite gallery in Melbourne.

This is an apartment building in Fitzroy, Melbourne where my husband and I used to live before we had kids. Before we got old, we were hip and groovy and used live in a studio loft apartment in the then trendy suburb of Fitroy (don't know if it still is trendy or not) Ours was the one at the top where the lights are on... from what I remember, all of those 4 lit up windows were ours. Oh, and in case it's not obvious, it's a painting of the apartment at night time. I wonder if the sky was pink because of the bush fires that were burning all around Victoria at the time,.. or it just may be the city lights....

Archibald Entry

Today was spent applying the final varnish coat to my Archibald Portrait Competition entry. Now my arm is sore from brushing it on, I regret not using a spray varnish....

Kevin Mitchell AKA Bob Evans who is my favourite Australian musician, kindly agreed to sit for this portrait a few times last year in amongst his touring and recording commitments, which I greatly appreciate.

The painting is oil paint on linen, 131 x 131 cm (why that size? because that's the biggest canvas that will fit inside my car) My inspiration behind this one was Bill Henson the photographer, and his commanding use of light.

My favourite part of this painting is shown in the close up photo... which shows how thick the paint is and how the colours are all mixed and slooshed (now is that a word?) together when viewed closely. When viewed from a distance this section actually forms part of the eyebrow.

Next week, it's making the journey to The Art Gallery Of New South Wales for the judging...

Hidden away in the ever shrinking wilderness of Tasmania are scenes such as these.

As a child growing up in Tasmania, seeing the destruction that logging can do has impacted on my mind heavily.

At such a young age, I was unaware of what logging actually was, and it's consequential impact on the natural environment, but even through the eyes of a child, the visual impact of the barren, ugly landscape bought upon feelings of fear and uneasiness.

To me, when I think of the Tasmanian wilderness, expanse areas of orange dirt, peppered with burnt black charcoal tree remnants, is what comes to mind.

It's now 30 years later, and apparently clearfelling of old growth forests is still being encouraged by Gunns Ltd across the state.

This painting is a view from a side road, on the drive to Cradle Mountain Tasmania.

The City Of Perth Black Swan Prize For Portraiture

In September I was selected as a finalist in the Black Swan Prize For Portraiture.

You can see my painting up the back of the room.... the teeny tiny one on the right. It's a portrait of the talented musician Kevin Mitchell, AKA Bob Evans and the lead singer of the band Jebediah.

The standard of the art work at the show was incredible, and it was an honour to be included with such fine artists, including Vincent Fantauzzo who painted the well known Health Ledger portrait for the Archibald 2008.

The winning portrait was brilliant, it's the large black and white one on the left of the photo, painted by artist Nafisa Naomi.

Penelope Bladen won the peoples choice award with her stunning painting of Jimmy Jack - Script Writer/Director.

I was ecstatic to have been select as a finalist, considering my painting is really just a small study completed in preparation for the 2009 Archibald... shhh.... I don't really want to mention the Archibald at all though... I don't want to jinx myself.... eeek!
